Still — Privacy Policy

Reviewed and published . Applies to the Still — Audio & Voice Recorder Chrome extension.

Still records the audio playing in a Chrome tab and keeps it on the computer you recorded it on. It has no server of its own, no account system and no cloud storage. This page describes exactly what it touches, what it keeps, and how to get rid of it.

What Still captures

When you start a recording, Still captures the audio output of the Chrome tab you selected. That is the whole of the capture:

  • Tab audio only. Your microphone is never opened, so speech in the room around you is not recorded. Voices arriving through a call inside that tab are part of the tab's audio and are captured with it.
  • No video, no screen. Nothing visual is captured or stored.
  • Only while you are recording. There is no passive or always-on listening. Capture starts when you start it and ends when you stop it or the browser closes.

Tab title and address

To show you which tab is about to be recorded, and to give a saved recording a name you will recognise, Still reads the title and the address of the tab you are recording. The title is stored with the recording as its label. This information stays on your device with everything else and is never transmitted.

What is stored, and where

Recordings and their details are written to IndexedDB, a storage area your browser keeps on your own computer for the extension. That store holds:

  • the captured audio itself, as it is recorded and after it is finished;
  • the recording's title, taken from the tab, and session metadata — when it started, how long it ran, its size and its current state.

Nothing in this store leaves your device. It is not synced between your computers, not backed up by Still, and not readable by me or by anyone else. It is removed when you delete the recording, when you remove the extension, or when you clear the browser's storage for it.

Still does not encrypt what it saves

To be explicit about it: Still stores audio and metadata in your browser's normal storage and does not add an encryption layer of its own. The protection those files have is the protection your computer and your browser profile already give them. If a recording is sensitive, treat it the way you would treat any other sensitive file on that machine.

What Still asks Chrome for, and why

  • Capturing tab audio. The only way an extension can record the sound of a tab. Used solely for the tab you started a recording on.
  • Reading the current tab's title and address. To show you which tab you are about to record and to name the resulting recording.
  • Local storage. To hold recordings and their metadata on your device between sessions, and so the library survives closing the popup.
  • Running in the background. So capture continues while the popup is closed. Without it, closing the popup would end the recording.
  • Saving a file. To hand a finished WAV to Chrome so it can be written to your downloads.

Each of these is used for the feature described and for nothing else. There is no remote configuration that can change what a permission is used for after the fact.

What Still does not do

  • No audio, transcript or metadata is uploaded anywhere.
  • There is no account, no login and no identifier tied to you.
  • There is no analytics, telemetry or crash reporting in the extension.
  • There is no advertising, and nothing is sold or shared with anyone.
  • There is no cloud sync and no server-side copy of a recording.

Keeping and deleting

Recordings stay in the local library until you remove them. There is no automatic expiry — Still will not quietly delete something you meant to keep.

  • One recording: delete its entry in the library inside Still. That removes the audio and the metadata for it.
  • Everything: remove the extension from Chrome, or clear the browser's site data for it. Both wipe the local store.
  • WAV files you already downloaded are ordinary files on your computer. Still cannot see or delete them — you have to remove those yourself, including from your operating system's trash.

Interruptions and recovery

Because audio is written to local storage as the recording runs, a recording that is cut short is usually not lost entirely. If Chrome closes while a recording is active, the audio already committed to storage can generally be recovered from the library. The last chunk — the part that had not been written yet at the moment of the interruption — may be lost. This recovery happens entirely on your device.

Children

Still is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children. It collects no personal information from anyone, of any age.

The website, and payments

This section is about ajink.in, not about the extension. The two behave differently and the extension's no-analytics position does not extend to this site.

  • Analytics. ajink.in loads Google Analytics 4 on every page, including this one. It records page views and the ordinary technical information a web analytics tool receives — approximate location, referrer, device and browser — and it sets cookies in your browser to do so. Google processes that data as described in Google's privacy policy. Blocking it with a content blocker or browser setting does not affect anything on this site.
  • Hosting. The site is served by a third-party hosting provider, which keeps the standard server logs any web host keeps — IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamp.
  • No accounts, no forms. There is nothing to sign into here and no form that collects your details. Getting in touch means email, which you send from your own mail client.
  • Payments. There is no checkout on ajink.in and no payment details are handled here. If a contribution option is offered in future on the support page, it will be a link out to a third-party payment service, and that service's own privacy policy and terms will govern what it collects. Nothing about a contribution is connected to the extension or to any recording.

The extension and this site both link out — to the Chrome Web Store, to ajink.in, and to third-party services. Those destinations have their own privacy practices, and this policy does not cover them.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use disclosure

Still's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. In practice: the audio and tab information Still handles are used only to provide the recording features you asked for, are not transferred to anyone, are not used for advertising, and are not read by a human — they never leave your device for any of that to be possible.

Changes to this policy

If what the extension does with your data changes, this page changes with it and the review date at the top is updated. The date reflects when the policy was actually reviewed, not an automatic timestamp.
